IT Desktop Support / Electrical Engineer

REQUIRED ATTRIBUTES

The person filling this position will split their time between supporting the information technology (IT) and electrical engineering (EE) departments. One week you may be helping debug problems with Outlook and the next troubleshooting a race car’s electrical system. Some days you’ll go home filthy and sweaty due to crawling all over a dusty, dirty, off-road military vehicle out in the field. Other days you’ll spend your entire day in an overly air conditioned server room. You must be interested in computers and electronics, curious about technology, and always willing to lend a hand and learn. You will learn more in one year at this job than you would in three years somewhere else. This job requires the ability to occasionally lift and carry 50lbs and ascend/descend stairs repeatedly. The ideal candidate will be a generalist with a broad skill set obtained from experience as follows:

  • Years of relevant work experience: 0-5
  • Career level: Entry to Experienced
  • Minimum education level: bachelor’s degree
  • A positive attitude, excellent communication skills, strong multitasking ability, and an interest in learning new skills/technologies
  • Self motivated to research solutions and knowledge
  • Ability to troubleshoot/debug – ability to think through a problem and methodically work through solutions starting with the obvious and working your way down
  • Basic computer hardware knowledge (must have experience in assembling and disassembling computers)
  • Basic EE/EET knowledge (transistors, opamps, RC filter basics, etc)
  • Basic computer software knowledge (Windows OS setup + MS Office apps)
  • Some programming experience (preferably C, VHDL, and/or Verilog)
  • Basic network knowledge (ability to troubleshoot simple networking issues – wired & wireless)
  • Strong interest in computer technology (i.e likes computer gaming + upgrading his computer + aware of new software etc)
  • Excellent hands-on skills and willingness to “get your hands dirty”

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

Experience with several of the following is desired:

  • MS Windows desktop support in a networking environment, including but not limited to MS Office applications and email client support
  • Microcontrollers (MCUs), digital signal processors (DSPs), or field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs)
  • Data acquisition systems
  • Web application development
  • Embedded electronics
  • Windows Server (NT Server, 2000 Server or 2003 Server) and strong networking experience is highly desired
  • PCB design (preferably with OrCAD Capture/PCB Editor)
  • Control systems
  • Matlab/Simulink (especially with “Embedded Target” toolset)
  • Motors and motor control
  • Robotics
  • Power conversion (inverters, converters, etc)
  • Familiarity with CAD software and Mechanical/Electrical engineering tools
  • Automobile/vehicle familiarity

This position requires a combination of IT and Electrical Engineering skills and is a position which offers growth potential. Applicants must be hands-on with the ability to handle concurrent fast paced projects, aggressive self-starters and require minimal direction, and be willing to jump in to do whatever is required to make a project a success. In short, we’re looking for motivated self-starters that like a challenge.
